The prompt for today was to write a terzanelle, which was a fun challenge and I didn't have to worry about meter. I like the involved rhyme scheme and repetition that the form requires. The topic was inspired by a story about a student who was happy about getting his first job. The constant emphasis on his "special needs" turned the story sour for me. It was less heartwarming and more inspiration porn. They could have taken the phrase "with special needs", in reference to him, out and the point still would have been made and the story would have been better. I'm all for celebrating good news with people, but not exploiting their joy to assuage what's broken in me.
I imagine that this poem is going to be one of the ones that I like for now, but later, I am going to find a bit heavy handed. But I am cool for liking it now.
